Yep! that was me above about 7 years ago, and here is what I learned along the way on how to avoid potholes when starting your first online business.
It’s nice to learn from someone who has been there and done that, don’t you think? While I had a good coach, I do not believe for a moment he was all that “knowledgeable” about internet marketing and SEO.
Fortunately, the system he recruited me into was well worth the $2,000 I paid for it, as a matter of fact, it helped me to avoid many internet marketing and online entrepreneurial potholes that otherwise would have caused my early demise here.
So here they are, some things to avoid, and in a short synopsis kinda’ way…
Starting Your First Online Business.
Here is a truth; you’ll hit some of them anyway, potholes that suck you in that is, but if you pay attention closely here you could avoid the nastier ones.
Why do I say you will hit some anyway? Well, it’s because we are human, and no matter what your “humanist” professor told you about us, he or she is dead wrong, we sometimes prefer to learn things the hard way. Sometimes, we are just simply hard headed.
Even when it comes to starting our very first online business, we either take on far too much or, we simply do not take on enough and try to just “figure it out” along the way. And what a great way to fail epically that is.
It takes some time to build an online business today, it is more than a few press releases, a video, and a landing page, trust me; it used to work that easy. But not today.
Today’s online entrepreneur, no matter what industry or business model you are a part of will take a little time to build authority and trust to truly create a livable or, job-killing income.
When it comes to starting an online business, new or not, potholes exist, and they are always there to reek havoc on your journey and even cost you both money and time along the way.
So, let’s look at how to avoid them…
The Fundamentals Of Internet Marketing.
The fundamentals of internet marketing should never be something “you think” you might need to know or learn. Facebook ads, list buying and so on will not build a lasting business or income.
What are these fundamental platforms you need to know about? Good question with a very simple answer:
- Basic SEO
- Understanding WordPress
- Social Media Marketing
- Video Marketing or Podcasting
- Email Marketing Basics
- Understanding Sales Funnels
- And of Course, Mastering Paid Advertising
Of course, there are a few little things that come along with each of these different, but all important internet marketing platforms like:
- Video/Podcast Marketing
- Social engagement and influencer marketing
- Live Casting or Webinars
- Email follow up
- List building
- Lead conversion
- Link building
- Paid social media advertising / PPC
Yes, there are a few more, if needs-be of course, but that will depend on your niche or industry.
However, once again, the basic knowledge and best practice of these different internet marketing platforms and strategies is a must today, it is what builds what matters most, what converts the most; authority and trust.
So, now that you get the fact you need some amount of common internet marketing sense let’s move on to some of the other killers of online entrepreneurial dreams today…
Passion For Your Business (Niche).
Passion for your business, your niche, is important.
I see people today that I know chasing the almighty buck, and with them, others following them on their journey to riches. Yes, some I have taught to build success online have had 6 and even 7 figure success.
But at the end of the day, it’s just the money, that is the end-all-be-all of their existence, and for those that follow them from one lousy opportunity to another, well, more power to them, it is just lame to see so many continually fail when those types of opportunities fail.
I love being an internet marketing coach, and I also have a huge passion for network marketing as well here. My passion for living a healthier life led me into partnering with a great opportunity, with a great company.
Today I am helping people change their lives from the inside out, and the money, well, that is once again just a side effect of passion.
Find the passion, now build a business on it.
What You Need, For Real.
I am a little tired of TedTalks, seriously, I think he talks too much. As a matter of fact, I think we all spend more time on “mindset-attraction-marketing-persona-cra” far too much. In the end, it’s nice to know, but it still did not teach you how to blog, make a video or, how important SEO still is today.
(Just for fun video)
You may have passion, and you may have listened to every Tony (the giant) Robbins podcasts, but where are you at online? Where is that business brand and message? Where is the content, the engagement, and the follow-up?
Take the passion, learn what social media channels you need to be on, what content management system works for you, and what sales funnel and email marketing software and platforms you will need.
Your voice behind the videos, podcasts, text, and even imagery will work itself out, you do not need more encouragement and opinions, you need to just get going!
For crying out loud, are you not tired of reading and listening to the success stories of others!?
Go make your own success story…
Quit Following Everything, Start Building.
I personally follow about 15 people and brands online for all my internet marketing learning. No, that does not include Google Alerts, but even with Google Alerts I am very selective with what I click on through to.
The problem with following too many voices is just that, too many voices to listen to cogs up the application of what you could learn from just a few voices. And as a matter of fact, it can cost you more money too as they will all be selling one thing after another.
It’s great to learn from those that know, coaches, mentors or even consultants. Learning comes with an “ends-means” though, which is to apply what you learn, not to keep seeking answers and buying them.
Quit following everyone, and start building someone, and that someone is YOU! -db
Now that is a great quote!
Your First Online Business Will Be Successful!
Following others to a point that leads to getting nothing done, that is not good. Not knowing what to do or where to start, another reason for failure here. What tools and platforms you need to build upon cannot be either underestimated or overlooked.
Your first online business go-around could be, and should be a successful one!
Make no mistake about it (pun intended), you take the tips above and put them into practice, you will at least save yourself time, money, and aggravation here at the least.
Success really is simple online, not easy, and it takes patience, but in the end, it is simple to build. It just depends on what you know, and how passionate you are about your particular business!
