(This is a guest post from one of my favorite professional bloggers, the awesome and rad Ryan Biddulph!… Let’s go.)
Starting a new niche blog can be an incredibly intimidating venture.
Heck….where DO you even start?
I recall the feeling well. 8 years ago I felt like a deer in the headlights of a driver with a gun turret strapped to the side of their pickup truck.
Great interview from a few months back…
Biddulph (that’s me!) felt like Bambi because I did not follow 3 niche blogger rules which will help you cut through the confusion and add clarity to your blogging campaign.
Or, 3 rules which help you turn your fear into fun, so you can make your blogging dreams come true.
This takes work guys, and the journey is pretty bumpy sometimes but if you are willing to dig deep, to honor your passion, to listen to pro’s and to stay on topic you can do amazing things in your blogging niche.
1: Follow Your Fun
Follow your fun.
Blog on a niche topic you feel passionate about.
This makes the work aka fun the reward, so the money/traffic/subscribers all feel like extra. Or icing on the cake. Or the cherry on top.
Of course you want to make money blogging. You want traffic. But those wants should make up a small percentage of your intent because these “gettings” as a newbie happen more easily as your “givings” increase.
“Givings” include giving of your time and energy to learn more about your niche, to study your niche in depth, to give of your time and talent in creating helpful blog posts, in promoting other bloggers freely by commenting on their blogs and by promoting them on social media.
When you give, you get. Giving feels easier if you are having fun giving. This is why new niche bloggers should go gaga over their niche. Gotta be something that courses through your veins to grow your venture into something successful and profitable.
2: Follow the Leaders
Follow niche leaders.
Learn from the best.
If you want to learn how to niche down or how to build a thriving internet marketing business read David’s latest posts, buy his courses, hire him to coach you and feast on his videos and podcasts.
If he knows his stuff inside out and you are new to blogging why would you try to do it on your own? Trying to fly solo only leads to years of struggle. Going lone wolf only drains your bank account. Been there. Done that.
Tap into rich resources. Follow 1 to 3 blogging leaders from your niche of choice.
Blogging tips bloggers would follow guys like Darren Rowse at Pro Blogger or Zac Johnson at Blogging Tips.
Follow the leaders to cut your learning curve by eons. Or by years.
Leaders know how to get you from your current starting point to your blogging dreams. More importantly, they know how to help you drill down into your reason why you want to build a successful blog.
Follow these pros to assail your fears. Learn from the best to succeed more quickly.
3: Follow One Course
I received an email yesterday from a new blogger. Said blogger felt they were “all over the place” with their blog posts, hopping from niche to niche like a cat on a hot tin roof.
This is a common new niche blogger mistake; you choose a niche then ditch the niche with every new post.
Follow one course. Follow one niche.
Specializing is the great secret to niche blogging success because where your attention and energy goes, grows.
If you learn your niche inside out and teach folks how to prosper in that niche through every blog post, product, and service, people will see you as an authority in said niche. Authorities succeed. Authorities get paid. Authorities get featured on top blogs. Authorities help a ton of people.
As a newbie blogger you may not even be able to picture yourself as an expert. Seems too far away, a hazy vision at best. But if you just do 1 thing every day, and give your energy to it, you will do it so darn well that your blog traffic and income will steadily increase over time until those numbers grow into avalanches.
I just sold 5 more eBooks. 8 years ago, it’d have taken me 6 months to sell an eBook or longer. The difference maker? I spent years doing 1 thing so I do it well and the sales or profits flow to me steadily through my devotion to doing that 1 thing.
Stop being a Jack of All Trades. Your blog ain’t a jambalaya of blog topics.
Specialize. Cover your niche through every post, through every page and through every video or podcast. Ensure all your ads and headers and footers and brand logo and taglines align perfectly with the 1 niche you choose.
Rock it out through the power of specialization…
