What is a lifestyle business? And, of course, the most important question, how do you start one? Well, here we are going to go over these answers, and especially how to start one the right way, the first time!
Yes, you can build a highly successful lifestyle business today and quit that day job. As a matter of fact, more and more people are doing just that today. From bloggers to YouTubers, and onto Instagram personalities and Facebook brands, and Shopify, today’s lifestyle can create a sizable audience and income to boot.
Here are my thoughts about starting a lifestyle business, and what the heck it is in the first place…

Lifestyle business or, niche business?
I get it if people want to call this a niche blog or niche affiliate business with another name, but I am not sure I totally agree with that.
What is a lifestyle business? Well, here is the definition we are given from Google:
A lifestyle business is a business set up and run by its founders primarily with the aim of sustaining a particular level of income, and to provide a foundation from which to enjoy a particular lifestyle….
Enjoying a lifestyle, that caught me off guard so much I had to study more about building a lifestyle business and wondering if it really is just another name for someone’s niche affiliate business or opportunity.
Yes, I can say that monetizing your lifestyle business can be through some networking business opportunity, or niche affiliate products or services. However, that is where it stops, those are just ideas for monetization, not a bottom line reason for a lifestyle business.
We are talking about a lifestyle that is a business, yes, but it is also a lifestyle that is lived out.
The focus here is not about money, it is about the lifestyle and the enjoyment and sharing a particular passion, and making enough money to retire to it.
Here are some awesome examples (from a Pacific northwestern point of view):
- Fly fishing
- Work at home lifestyle
- Health and wellness blog
- Photography (nature, weddings, ect.)
- Outdoor life
- Survival living
- Local travel guide
- Cryptozoology research
- Faith-based living
- And so on…
These are just a few ideas you could run with, and to tell you the truth, the only niche marketing part about this is picking a niche out of some of the topics above. What I mean is maybe you are into the outdoors, and you prefer camping and hiking, well, create a lifestyle brand and business there, with camping and hiking.
So, now that we know what a lifestyle business is, let’s look at where and what you will need to start one, and monetize it.
Habits & mindsets, it all starts here.
Good habits matter and good habits come from a good mindset.
Personally, as a highly successful online entrepreneur and lifestyle business owner, I have read from the greats like Zig, Jim, and even a little from the newer mindset generation. However, as a side note, there is nothing new from the new guys, the old message is just rebranded is all.
Either way, you need a good mindset, and that mindset at first should be all about building good habits.
From making time to get things done, to making time to learn new things, and put them all into practice.
I know this section is short, but in reality, it should be common sense, and if it is not, well, you got bigger fish to fry than be here right now, and I mean that.
Pick your lifestyle niche.
Pick your passion. The simplest answer to finding the best lifestyle to build a comfortable business around online, and offline, is really the one thing or several things you enjoy in your life.
Family, faith, life, travel, business, hiking, or, if you are like me…, Bigfoot! Ha!
Actually, I love my faith, my family, business. But, I also love the outdoors, camping, fly fishing, and the conversation of Bigfoot.
I started a simple little blog and YouTube channel not even 7 months ago before this blog post, and boom! today it is growing into a highly profitable lifestyle business.
The tip of the day for you is this; ““pick what you love to talk about and share the most, or else you’ll be picking your poison instead.”
Besides, if you don’t build your business around what you love, well, you’ll simply be trading one job for another!
What platforms you’ll need.
Platforms first, and I mean the platforms you’ll need to work with, not strategies for them, yet.
WordPress or Shopify, or both: For some, and maybe this is you in particular, but you have an idea for a great little e-commerce shop on Shopify. And, knowing some basic search engine optimization, and how to scale your traffic, you may not need a blog or WordPress website. I think that is a fine idea! Maybe not a few years ago, but today, I think it is just fine.
But, for some, the power of a solid and SEO friendly website and blog is a must, well, WordPress is the call for the day for you.
I like Squarespace for e-commerce, but not for a niche website and blog. And personally speaking, WIX and Weebly can seriously take a hike.
Social media: 3 channels or profiles if that is what you want to call them, but 3 of them is what you’ll need. Not that you will focus on all 3 of them, but you will share to all of them. Personally, I believe minimalism was meant for internet marketing practices, less is more today when it comes to the channels and platforms you use.
Social media is a prime example! Get to carried away here and you can find yourself sinking in a sea of the “nobody cares” here.
keep it simple, and keep it focused. Find the right 3 channels for you, and then focus most of your attention on e one or two of them, but share to all three. This will be a better and more effective strategy today.
Find where your traffic hangs out the most, rate them, and use that scale to use as your guide of importance to engage with. (Okay, there was some strategy there, sorry.)
Sales funnel software: I love ClickFunnels, and I am an affiliate here. Of course, LeadPages, Thrive Themes, and even the ole’ OptimizePress works just fine. My reason for ClickFunnels is for the training and ease of use.
Either way, you need a flawless sales funnel system, as well as the strategy for using it.
Your sales funnel will be the life or death of your lifestyle business today, period. You may think a lifestyle business is all day tripping down a leisurely path, and it can be, but you need the right tools and platforms in place first.
Email marketing software: Part of your sales funnel is a completely different part of your overall presence online.
Email marketing may use sales pages, landing pages, and even webinar pages for some, but without an email marketing system like Aweber, well, how are you going to get the emails and email them?
Exactly, with something like Aweber.
I love Aweber, I have been with them for years now, and never once have I had any serious issues or problems of really any kind at all.
Email marketing, just so you know, is the most important part to monetizing your lifestyle business today. Without email marketing, you will lose out on more money than you could possibly imagine!
Email marketing is the lifeblood of any business online, even a lifestyle business.
Video or podcast channel: Video is better in most cases, but not always. Most of you of whom I have coached know that I prefer video because of its SEO, and its ability to truly connect a brand to a person.
Nothing beats personableness when it comes to a lifestyle business.
Work ethic: You either have it, or you get it, one of the two. Without a great work ethic, you might as wait around for free healthcare that is never free. Work is work, even if it only a 4-Hour Work Week, it takes gumption, drive, and both of those are built on one’s personal work ethic.
“Best” lifestyle business marketing practices.
While I could create a small novel here on the subject, I would rather give you the basics now, and you can grab the rest FREE HERE.
However, when it comes to the best practices to building, branding, and growing your lifestyle business online, that means each one is as different as the owner of that particular business. And, because of that simple fact, your business, and your target audience will spend their time around your particular niche in different places online.
What I mean is this; WHERE your target audience spends their time online, and how they prefer their content will differ from niche to niche. You might need to be and have a full and engaging presence on LinkedIn while the fat is completely different for someone else.
What I am saying is this, find where your audience is spending the majority of time online, and find out what type of content they consume the most and start with those platforms first.
Search marketing is just that, it is everything that consists of free strategies and best practices of them in growing traffic through search engines, social media, and platforms like podcasting and video marketing.
This is, simply put, getting in front of the eyeballs of the different search results people are searching when it comes to particular questions online. Like, for instance, you Google or go to YouTube and search “how to start a lifestyle business” and you find me and this video above, or the link to the blog post via Google.
Search marketing can include:
- Social media sharing
- Facebook group pages
- Live casting
- and so on…
Of course, there are several more that I could cite, but for now, just so you know, blogging and video are prerequisites of a solid traffic driving brand and lifestyle business online today.
This can include:
- Native advertising
- Adwords PPC
- Facebook advertising
- Twitter advertising
- Banner advertising on high traffic websites and blogs
- And so on…
To tell you a truth, I used to be dead set against paid media and traffic, even today it delivers decent traffic, but not as quality traffic as content marketing does. However, it is better today than it was a few years ago, and I suggest a simple mixture of both.
Follow through and engagement.
This will include:
- Social media marketing
- Email marketing
- And so on as well…
I love to follow through and follow up, without this mindset and the practices to go with it, you will fail here and your lifestyle business will last about as long as it took to come up with the idea in the first place.
From solid email marketing and list building strategies to engagement on social media and even live-casting or webinars, today it takes more than just a paid advert to convert people, it takes you.
The lifestyle business …owner.
You are more than a brand when it comes to the lifestyle business you start, and how you start it, you are a business owner in the end, so treat it like one.
It is great to create something kicked-back, relaxed, and smooth as white sand on a faraway beach, but this is a business that comes with planning and strategy, period.
