7 Mistakes That Are Hurting Your List Building Efforts, And How To Fix Them!

The 7 mistakes that are hurting your list building efforts below are some of the biggest reasons why many new online business owners and entrepreneurs are failing here.

When it comes to reasons for failure online, these are the most popular and the easiest to fix too, no kidding, they are simple to fix!

So, let’s look together at these mistakes that you may be making, and let’s look at how we get caught up in them, and how to fix ’em when we do…

Hurting Your List Building Efforts.

There are many reasons you might be hurting your list building efforts, and sometimes it is self-inflicted. Either out of plain ole’ ignorance of what is expected here or, lack of real focus on creating value instead of just a focus on money, there are many real pitfalls out here.

For the most part, however, the reason people find themselves making these simple list building mistakes, however, is usually due to lack of knowledge, basically, a lack of good internet marketing coaching and skills to build a proper business online.

It takes planning here, and it takes strategy. So let’s look at the mistakes made with the lack of both through their 7 most common worst practices, and how we can fix ’em, and change our mindsets as well!

You Do Not Believe In Ethical Bribes.

I do not believe that bribing people is a good thing, Dave!

Me either!

Bribes. Just sounds horrible, doesn’t it? Being ethical is a good thing, and an ethical bribe is not a bad thing, it is what you are willing to give away in trade for more communication with someone via email who has come to know, like, and trust you and your message.


See, an “ethical bribe” is a good thing, it is just a fair trade off between two people of information or service online.

But what makes a bribe online “ethical“? Well, first off, it needs to be one of equal or, nearly equal value.

See, my email address is a pretty personal deal for me online. While some marketers out here do not believe this or treat it thusly, the ethical bribe for someone’s personal email had better be a “bribe” that is worth that personal access!

However, in the end, the ethical bribe is just that, ethical, it is a good thing, it is okay for you to trade off your awesome information for their personal email. If you do not feel it is okay, well, I have no idea what to tell you, and your list building efforts will suffer.

You Have No Landing Pages.

I use ClickFunnels. I used to use OptimizePress, Thrive, Power Lead System, and I almost considered LeadPages and Infusionsoft. I chose two platforms, ClickFunnels (affiliate link) and Aweber (affiliate link), together they are a lower cost to me in the end, and they work as good or better than the others mentioned here.

But let’s talk about landing pages and why you need them.

Professionalism. Personal branding (bet you would not have thought about that one! Ha!). Highly convertible. Mobile friendly. Simple user interface.

These are just some of the most important reasons to have or get some type of landing page or landing page software today, now! Your future list building efforts depend on them!

The difference between your web presence and the person next to you that is actually making money is the list they are building.

And guess what? Yep, that list is being built on great content, good calls to action, a great ethical bribe, and an awesome personalized landing page that spells it all out in a simple way.

I understand having a contact page, and if you are a local business, I suggest you get one and optimize it for local SEO reasons.

However, no matter what your business is here, a landing page is designed to gather subscribers, it is that “middleman” stop that contains the ethical bribe, this way people can make a frictionless exchange of what they value, for the value you offer.

You Have No Pop Ups.

To be honest, when they started popping up all over the place, pop-ups were the bain of my existence, I really disliked them, and I mean I really, really disliked them.

I even spoke out against them for almost a year!

Today, I can’t live without them and neither should you.

Personally, instead of paying an outrageous sum of money each month for a ton of stuff I will not need (like people do, and often), I simply invested in ClickFunnels and Aweber.

These two awesome tools allow me to do everything any online business would need to do to capture leads, and convert them.

As a matter of fact, I have to say, looking at even some of these larger brands out here using those other high priced systems, well, I’m glad mine looks and feels like it does, I hate being behind in web design, and worse off, using outdated software that looks like it was created in 2010.

But, back to no pop-ups.

Like I said above, at first I was not a fan, but today I am. Given the fact that they “pop up” at the right time, and not all the time, and what I mean by that is that they are always there and annoying, but done properly can really be effective for your list building efforts.

Great pop-ups work if it is placed well, and if it has what matters most which is a great free offer!

Can’t Figure Out The FREE Offer.

The free offer, or the “freemium” some like to call it. Either way, your ethical bribe better have something of value attached to it or you will have a heck of a time trying to convert new traffic into subscribers, period.

The free offer, however, is a complicated thing to figure out, hey, it matters as much as the content marketing that leads to it if you ask me.

I mean seriously, what do you use, an ebook? Videos? A type of white paper study done recently? A podcast series? An email series? Jeez! So much to choose from! I could go on!!!

This is the biggest reason people fail at building a really big and fruitful list, the free offer is just not all that great, or you lack one because you do not know which one to go with.

I can help you make that decision right now.

Go to the websites and blogs of your top 5 competitors and see what they are offering. I did that years ago and what I found was that 2 had ebooks they were giving away, and the other three were offering a short video series.

The video series sounded great! I love to write, even back then, but I also looked at my target audience and realized that sometimes they simply preferred video. So, a video series was the way to go for me, and especially my target market.

So, what do your competitors offer? Which one appeals to you? Great, now get to creating it!

Take Advantage Of Popular Posts.

Creating new content can become a stumbling block, especially when you are new here and are into your 3-4 month. And of course, any slow down now in good content can and will affect your list building efforts.

This is where that evergreen content you should have created comes in handy.

When the topics are slow to come to mind, and the comments from your readers and or, subscribers are not throwing you a bone for ideas, evergreen content, you popular posts that are, and can be a real Godsend.

Once in a while the traffic and readers are a bit quiet, even here, and that is when I look up my older, most popular and evergreen posts and start updating them and grabbing ideas for new content to create, new answers to help you better your internet marketing best practices.

Some of your most popular blog posts are truly the evergreen content that can keep on giving for years to come.

No Calls To Action In Your Blog Posts.

The number one killer to your list building is no good calls to action, anywhere!

No pop-ups. Not exit calls to action. Not even a sidebar CTA or links to a landing page. If all you wanted to have here was a journal, you should have started a free one on Blogger, or Tumblr.

But you have a WordPress website and blog, and you have some decent content that could literally, and should literally be converting traffic right now. Well, without directing people on what step to take next you really only have a cool journal, not a business.

See, they may not take that route today, but when people are ready, they need to have the way pointed out, some people are new here, or not as tech savvy as you and need to be directed on where to go, and what to actually do.

But without those clear calls to action, well, no list building, and definitely no list conversion can occur.

Make you calls to action visible, here are some simple ways to accomplish this on your website and blog (and non-intrusive):

  • A free offer tab to landing page in navigation
  • Sidebar opt-in form
  • Floating bar at the top or bottom of every page
  • Exit pop-up
  • Scroll up opt-in form at the bottom corner of each page
  • Contextual hyperlink within the pages or post content

And so on…

You Lack Video? Really?

Video, you lack video. Ina  day and age when there are literally 10’s of millions of videos watched daily and some in your own niche, you are absent of this most crucial part of personal branding.

99% of my own content has a video embed right on the page. This not only helps with SEO because of the YouTube link from that video embedded on my page, but it also helps the personalization of that content.

As a matter of fact, the day I started adding video to my blog content nearly a decade ago, my opt-in rate did a double-digit hike almost overnight, and I mean like a 40+% hike at that!

Video marketing today is as important as blogging and creating other types of awesome evergreen content because it has an advantage your blog post would not, it get’s ranked on two search engines!

Yes, YouTube is a search engine, and the second largest one next to Google by the way.

I know, you are a little nervous about this one. Let me tell you this, don’t be, there are more people here that will like what you have to say than not. And those who don’t care, well, you’ll never hear from them.
