3 Common Traits Of Online Business Failure, And How To Avoid It…

Remember, failure is a circumstance, not a person. And, like all circumstances, we can work our way out of them. So, here are 3 common traits of online business failure practiced by many an online entrepreneur, and how to avoid it all.

I had a friend, and young pastor Ben Courson make that statement: “Failure is a circumstance, not a person.” It is something that stuck with me in a way that has helped me help you better.

So, as I dive into these 3 common traits of online business failure, remember, you are not a failure, it is what you are doing that is failing you…

Traits Of Online Business Failure…

As we go over these common reasons for failing with an online business venture, I also want to give you some help and tips to help you get past any of these you might currently be facing or up to your eyeballs in.

I hear it often;

“why am I a failure?! Why do I fail online with everything? Can you help me, Dave?”

First off, if you were about to email me or call me and ask me these questions, know that I’ll first tell you that you are not a failure, it is the marketing practices or lack of best marketing practices that is failing you.

Never let failure define who you are, let it define what you need not do or practice anymore starting today. Oh, and that can be applied to your personal life as well.

Let’s dive in…

No End In Sight.

To have a lasting and meaningful online business, you must first define the end to your means.


That should be a quote I think! And while it should, what I mean by that is that we should have a clear vision of where we want to go with our business down the road, not just look at it from the here and now, I leave that to the hucksters online.

You and I, well, we need to plan, strategize and do all we can to solidify the future of our business, not just take a wild leap, which is what we do when we decide to jump into a business of our own.

And maybe that is why many people fail, at least the few I have talked with. They have an epiphany or brilliant idea. The next day, they are in business!

Yeah, this is when you see you 3rd cousin or best friend from high school pop up on your Facebook wall with their new ‘biz opp’ and what-not flagrantly spammed all over the place.

There was just the thought of watching 10 ads a day to get rich and sharing that false hope to everyone who was busy doing something smarter.

The next week, boom! Failure! Hopes dashed, trust broken, and the online-money-making-world is now all one big scam run by some liberal consortium living in the woods of Maine.

Well, that is all untrue, except for the liberals trying to suck money from you, someone needs to pay for their every need you know…

But politics and correct thinking aside, the online world is as much of a risk as the offline world, and you can take that to the bank, even one owned by a socialist. Hey, truth is truth.

If you ask me personally, I think it is riskier to trade my future for someone else’s dreams, when in fact, they are not even sure of the outcome and are thrown about by political and economical winds.

The internet is different. While the economy may be bad where you are, it is great somewhere else, and that is how I more than survived 8 years of Obamanomics, I actually flourished!

While he had Ford move to Mexico, myself and those I coach grew businesses online.

It is horrible thinking if you fail once and blame everything the internet is and not yourself for our failure. Honestly, that is like blaming me for slavery in America in the 1700’s, it makes no sense, and it is a false claim.

There are more seriously legitimate opportunities and business ideas online than there are crappy like “watch 10 ads a day” programs.

Before you start a business, plan it out, look at where you want to be with it in 1 year, 2 years, and even 3 -5 years down the road. And when you see that, you’ll then come up with a plan to build up to it.

Keep the end in mind when starting an online business!

No Content Marketing Strategy.

You have no internet marketing skills. No marketing knowledge at all. No matter what level or non-level of internet marketing knowledge you have, you need to learn and build a serious content marketing strategy today.

“Remember, failure is a circumstance, not a person.”

Content marketing generates the best and most qualified traffic online today. Better than Facebook ads that convert at an average of 7% for most businesses out here, and better than PPC for sure.

Yes, you can pay for more eyeballs and clicks, but real quality traffic is sold on content, and that is a fact you can find anywhere online!

Like planning out your business over the long haul, building on a great content marketing strategy is part of that planning.

Plan to create value, and plan on creating and sharing that value where it matters. Not only do we plan on where we distribute that content, but we also target the right market or persona with that content.

Don’t fail, learn what you need to learn, and build on value.

Failure Follows Every Fart In The Wind.

Like a fart in the wind, that is what it is like following every new idea, platform, opportunity, or nailing down a successful online business when you can’t settle down.

I hear people all the time, even close friends here trying to go from one list building tactic to another, or one list building system to another. Either way, I started finding myself getting caught up in it too, and it is like trying to catch a fart in the wind.

(I hope you’ve never tried it, it really is hard! Ha!)

Once in a while, we hear of people who build a seriously successful business in a short period of time online and offline for that matter.

One of the reasons is based on their FOCUS.

Those who come to me who have been online trying to get a successful business going for some time now usually have little focus on any one thing. Usually, to be honest, they are flying around from one thing to the other in a hectic manner.

They “need big money now!” But they are not willing to settle down and build something to last. It is one program after another without any real passion for it.

This is why accountability and good internet marketing coaching works. I’ve settled some pretty successful people down, all they needed was some bitter truth and a butt kicking.

Don’t Fail. Plan.

Yes, many people fail before they succeed, but they are focused on that one thing all the time for the most part. There is nothing in their way, they learn and move with the curve, always planning, mastering, and moving forward.

Don’t fail with your online business, plan on succeeding, once you get that mindset down, the rest will fall in line.

    Ah, yes… following every fart in the wind. That’s a bit like shiny object syndrome, isn’t it? So many fail because they want to pursue the newest, latest and greatest.

    The truth is, as you know, that most successful businesses are quite simple. There’s no secret sauce or magic formula. Just hard work. The right things done, day in and day out.

    8:45 – “Most people fail online because they chase every fart…” Love it. Thank goodness I found you to help me focus on the most important farts :).

    18:22 – “I am going to find things that I connect with, that I can share and build upon, find things that work for me.” Great wisdom. Essentially, figure out how to make a living from your hobby and what you are passionate about. Connect with those people and groups and add value, have fun, kick ass.

    17:10 – “Start building, quit following every fart in the wind, get the end in sight and then figure out how do I reach that goal, and what do I need to reach that goal and then start learning those things.” Well said, that’s money, and just as we spoke about on our last coaching call.
